Hi, I'm Jonathan

I help small business owners in San Diego work out what's holding them back, and then I go fix it. I spent years on a shop floor before I did this, so most of what you deal with in a week I've dealt with myself.

How I got here

It took me a while to get here, and the parts that look like detours are the ones I use most.

01Where I Started

In The Back Of The Shop

My first job was at an optical company, in the back, making the product. Not glamorous. They moved me out front to sell, and then I was managing the store, which meant a number to hit every month and a team to hit it with.

02What Happened

Hitting A Ceiling

I worked in corporate stores, in franchises, and in small independents. Spend enough time doing that and you can see the whole road in front of you. Mine didn't go as far as I wanted, which is an uncomfortable thing to work out about your own job. I was good at it by then and I still couldn't see a way further up.

03What I Did About It

Back To School

So I went back. Bachelor's degree at UC Riverside, then a master's in business with a marketing focus. I'd worked out by then that working with people was where I enjoyed the job most, and I wanted to understand why some businesses grow while others just stay busy. I'd worked in both and couldn't have told you the difference at the time.

04Where I Am Now

Using Both Halves

These days I use both sides of that. Nearly every small business I meet is already good at the thing it does. What's missing is a clear message, a website that works, and numbers the owner can read without help. Those three things are what I spend my time on.

You should understand your own business

You shouldn't need to call a marketing person to get your own numbers explained back to you. I go through everything with you as we do it, so when we're finished you can keep it running yourself. Plenty of people in this line of work would rather you couldn't.
